And if you are reading this after July 8th 2017, then happy celebrate you day. I could genuinely, sincerely weep with happiness that this song exists.
The Rest Of Us is a soaring anthem that is fuelled by poignancy and pathos, yet never forgets to celebrate and encourage you to raise your hands to the sky in emphatic testimony. It reminds us that there are still people across the world, even on our own doorsteps, who fear embracing their true inner selves. Fear of rejection, loneliness, bullying, persecution, inequality and still even torture and death. While the rights that should have been there all along have emerged for the Pride community over the past fifty years, we are still in a world where the electoral-President of the United States refused to acknowledge Pride month in that country; where the British Prime Minister would rather spend billions of pounds on securing her power with an anti-gay alliance. It is no wonder people are scared. But this song is the ray of light coming through the grey clouds that we need and deserve. It is beautifully constructed - delicate piano opens the song and our gorgeous, brave, artistic cast of performance verbalise with eloquence that inner demons we are battling with grace and sensitivity. Putting this fears into melodic cadence gives us something to fight against. This is our one moment in time, and it all crescendos into a magnificent we-are-the-world style chorus. The tempo quickens, the message is euphoric and optimistic. We are a community. There is solidarity. The ebullient textured vocals against that addictive broadway-esque Lion King beat sends a dopamine rush to your brain that makes you feel like you can achieve anything. Add into this an epic key change, finger clicking/hand clapping grooves and glimpses of a dance routine that make you want to shimmy with glee, and this is a wonderful rallying call to arms that soothes the soul and elevates you to where you deserve to be. I need this song in your life. YOU need this song in your life. Thanks to all involved :)
