LOST TREASURES – THE KEYS
LOST TREASURES
The Keys – “The Keys Album”
[linebreak style=”24.png”]
Sometime around 2005, my good friend Stefan Johannson sent me a copy of a power
pop compilation called Shake Some Action, Vol. 1 UK, and while there was a lot of great
music on the CD, one track stood out well above the others: “I Don’t Wanna Cry” by a
band called the Keys. I had never heard the song and had never heard of the band, but I
could not shake the song! If you’ve heard it, you know what I mean. A perfect slice of
Beatle-esque pop with an incredibly active and memorable melody, some well-placed
Searchers 12-string fills and tight harmonies throughout. The quest was set and the quarry
was The Keys.
DOWNLOAD – “I Don’t Wanna Cry” – HERE
I tracked down a copy of the album on eBay and was not disappointed. In fact, I was
amazed that the album had somehow escaped my notice on its original UK release
on A&M in 1981. Working the same musical territory as bands like the Jags and the
Vapors—but also bearing the imprint of their more famous producer Joe Jackson—the
Keys offer some of the best power pop of the time. Their discography is brief: the one
album and six singles (and seven of the single sides appear on the LP) but the quality of
their recorded work is remarkable, with great pop songs and taut, energetic arrangements.
YOU TUBE STREAM of “The Keys”
Some of the songs reflect the influence of their producer to the point of distraction,
especially “It Ain’t So” and “Saturday to Sunday Night,” but the bulk of the tracks
display the band’s more traditional sensibilities. The standout tracks are “One More
Reason” (a ‘50s style vocal piece a little reminiscent of Roy Hamilton’s “Don’t Stop”),
“Spit It Out” (a nearly perfect blend of ‘60s American pop and British mod), “If It’s Not
Too Much” (an economical Merseyside pastiche), “Greasy Money” (a lovely ballad that
would have fit right in on the Rumour’s Max or Brinsley Schwartz’s Nervous on the
Road), and, of course, “I Don’t Wanna Cry.”
The Keys’ personnel included main songwriter and bassist Drew Barfield, guitarists
Steve Tatler and Ben Grove, and drummer Geoff Britton. Beatle fans will remember
Britton from his brief stint as the drummer for Paul McCartney and Wings during the
Nashville sessions that resulted in the single “Junior’s Farm” and the initial sessions
for Venus and Mars. Barfield most recently played in Los Pacaminos, a Tex-Mex band
with ‘80s superstar Paul Young, while Ben Grove joined The Retros.
To date, the album has not been reissued on CD, though given its major-label status and
its Joe Jackson connection, a reissue is eventually likely. While I had never seen a copy
of the album in my local record stores, I had no trouble finding it on eBay and have since
seen copies regularly offered there and on GEMM. So, go on, get a copy!

LOST TREASURES – D.B.M & T
LOST TREASURES:
D, B, M & T – “Fresh Ear”
Only released in Great Britain, Germany and New Zealand in October, 1970, “FRESH EAR” from D, B, M & T was their one and only albums. So off the beaten path is this, that in over 20 years of living and breathing power pop, this release has never come up in passing on any compilation tapes or mentions in tens of thousands of email exchanges with music fans since the early 90s.
Now, not a purely power pop album, the 9 tunes on “Fresh Ear” (along with 14 bonus tracks on the 2006 reissue on Repertoire Records CD out of print) fall into the stylings of the Hudson Brothers, Blue, Marmalade, “Trafalgar“-era Bee Gees., Pilot and Honeybus. Vocally, the melodies can sound like a higher pitched CS&Y and even Thunderclap Newman(“Something in the Air”).
The core of the album so solid, it’s hard to argue there’s a dud on there and the bonus track push the timeline forward from the original LP’s original 1970 release into the mid/late 70s, ushering in some new styles of proto-glam and other sounds of ‘those times’ – and not all of them suck with most of them being quite good.
D, B, M & T arrived out of the ashes of a fairly popular UK-based band(totally unknown in the U.S.), Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich who recorded a bunch of very good-to-excellent albums between 1966-1969. When Dave Dee went solo, the best of the band decided to gather up their letters in the names and continue on.
Musically, a very good move. Sales-wise, no one cared and they band quickly splintered only to work in varying capacities for the rest of the decade and doing a reunion or two of the original band, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich. There’s next to no information to found on the internet on this short-lived group beyond the informative liner notes on the German CD reissue on Repertoire.

THE BLOOD RUSH HOUR: Who Folds First (Nicola)
The Blood Rush Hour is a cornucopia of styles, beats and ideas melded into a seamless whole, operatic in scope, but rooted in the mad pop science of XTC, David Myhr, Marco Joaquim, The Foreign Films, The Pillbugs, or the Dowling Poole. Pop music is all about dynamics, and the Hour’s dynamics out-dynamic every other band. The hooks and changes keep coming at you and coming at you, and like all great pop, they are both surprising and logical. The stomping riff on “Danny” sounds like it migrated from Boston or Kansas, segueing into the sweetness of the Beach Boys.
The Henry Mancini flute-interlude on “The Space That We Have Made” should be at odds with the song’s darker tone, but it’s not. The poppy intro to “6,4,5 and Sometimes 1” has a touch of Burt Bacharach or Billy Joel, but the radio-friendly song itself is sui generis, like “Come On Eileen,” and all of the Hour’s work. Ironically, “6,4,5” about every song on the radio sounding the same, of which the Hour will never be accused. If there are any stations left that play progressive rock.
Robert DeStefano’s unmistakeable tenor sings most leads, trading off with the equally capable Joseph Tobias and Christian Phillips. DeStefano’s “intermission” could have been part of a Dmitri Tiomkin movie score. Elton John or Billy Joel would embrace “I’m the One” as one of their own.
Mad pop science are the songs that break free of conventional structure, such as The Hour’s own “6,4,5 and Sometimes 1,” the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and a handful of other pop pioneers who shun conventional structure. Who Folds First is one of those records of which you will never tire.
Sublime.
Five stars.
JOHN SAN JUAN: Smashed (Remo)
San Juan’s diaphanous and melodically daring music exudes a cool blue vibe like Mose Allison or Laurie Biagini. It’s unique to San Juan and instantly identifiable. With flatted fifths and a bittersweet mix of major and minor, he weaves a seamless spell over fifteen songs. Just as Marshall Crenshaw’s debut album was of a piece, so is this. A cool blue piece. Not jazz, but jazzy, and you can hear Mose, or Van Morrison, or Sarah Vaughan singing these songs. It’s power pop of the best sort—unexpected and exciting. Songs are short save for the epic six minute “Move It,” sometimes employing flute, like the danceable “Why Aren’t You Dancing.” Imagine the lounge insouciance of Dan Hicks but with greater discipline and more serious intent.
Four and a half stars.
RUBY FREE: Shades
Rick Hromodka’s latest combines elements of canyon rock with a sunny, wide-open disposition reminiscent of the Cowsills and the Continental Drifters. “Take A Ride” is a road trip soundtrack with that characteristic A/B harmony popularized by the dBs. Guitarist Joe Giddings comes in like a dentist’s drill on “Owe to the Man.” Only not painful. Giddings’ clear ringing tone is the expert pinstriping on the body of the song.
“Lonelier Than Me” is something Neil Young might sing. Giddings answers the call on “Talk To Me,” closing the confessional with a talking solo. “Start Of Something Big” is a hook explosion a la the Knickerbockers or Artful Dodger, with a stadium-ready bridge that earns fist pumps. “Time Without Numbers” echoes the first song, closing with that exquisite A/B harmony.
CORIN ASHLEY: Broken Biscuits (Murray Hill)
Four years ago Corin Ashley’s New Lion Terraces was our record of the year. Then he had a stroke. Now he’s back. Broken Biscuits is more mad pop science, which is music that does not adhere to the formula which Blood Rush Hour calls “6,4,5 and Sometimes 1.” Ashley takes chances, uses strange chords, and creates orchestral pop along the lines of XTC, The Dowling Poole, and Jellyfish. “Little Crumbles” starts like a Ringo composition, familiar and somewhat stupid until it gets to the bridge, which takes off into the stratosphere. The spiky harmony of “Wind Up Boy” has a Merrymakers/Jellyfish vibe balancing the sweetness of the strings. “Edison’s Medicine” has that vodee-o-vodee Rudy Vallee feel with the megaphone, but twists abruptly into flight on a characteristically stunning Ashley bridge. “In Appropriate Fashion” starts out like an ABC jam, but it too explodes into a gorgeous hook.
Not as solid as Terraces, but head and shoulders above most pop.
Four stars.
