Starlust – Girly Books & Magazines – Obscure New York Proto Punk
Starlust – Girly Books & Magazines/ Solid State Hysteria –Starlust ST 100 (US 197?)
Starlust is one of those names mentioned in the same breath as other New York bands thrown up in the wake of the New York Dolls such Teenage Lust, Harlots of 42nd Street, Magic Tramps, Brats etc…However there is nary any information on Starlust let alone on this release.
The main guy was called Steve and he later re-appeared as a member of The Grapplers who released a single on Sonic in 1980. It has been mentioned that this single was recorded at Bell Studios at the same time as the first Kiss album, which might place it to 1973, but there are reasons to doubt this: The label states it was recorded at Kingdom Sound where the Ramones, DMZ, BOC and others recorded but I doubt this as well as the A side sounds more like a home studio recording… oh and mixed at Record Plant? Again big doubt…It also sounds later than 1973
Girly Books & Magazines by Starlust sounds like a total New York sleaze classic –right? Well it nearly is - the tune and lyrical content are great, HOWEVER it goes on and on and on for over 6 minutes, so loses the initial momentum it had promised.
A better idea would have been to have a part I and part II split across both sides of the record and it would have helped in mastering it louder than it actually is. The B side (the AM side) is a buzzing and loud instrumental with some raucous guitar, like a Dictators backing track

V/A 3X4 - featuring The Bangles, The Three O' Clock, Rain Parade and Dream Syndicate (Yep Rock, 2019) - A brief review.
A good thirty to 35 years has passed since the heyday of these artists, so what gives with this crash course in Paisley you might ask? Well, December 2013 saw the reunion of all four bands for two nights in L.A. and San Francisco. For all groups involved, not to mention established fans, it was a reminder of just how tight-knit this collective was back in the day. In essence, it was significantly more than a mere nostalgia trip. In the intervening years since, the Dream Syndicate and Bangles carried on in earnest, but something must have felt unfinished, for in 2018 all four combos found themselves smooshed together in the same king sized bed for yet another reunion in the guise of 3X4.
The premise of the 3X4 is a simple enough one, wherein each of the Paisley cornerstones takes to task one song apiece from their other three contemporaries. The Bangles cover tunes by Rain Parade, the Syndicate and Three O' Clock, and the other groups follow likewise. For those listeners in the audience who fancy themselves as aficionados of all four bands, or even those who've developed an appreciation of even just two or three this is a record that quite literally sells itself, not only by virtue of it's participants, but by the volley of long-endeared songs 3X4 unfurls like a new set of Venetian blinds. On tap is a veritable Paisley hit parade with the Three O'Clock tackling the Dream Syndicate's signature "Tell Me When It's Over" and the Rain Parade's masterstroke, "What She's Done to Your Mind." The Bangles turn in a reverent version of the Three O' Clock's timeless "Jet Fighter," the Syndicate wield an unlikely reading of the Bangles' "Hero Take a Fall," while Rain Parade do adequate justice to another Bangles classic, "Real World." And that's only the half of what's in store here.
A couple of quick overarching observations. Few if any of these covers outdo the original recordings. No one is reinventing the wheel here, nor is anyone trying to 'best' or even challenge one another. Instead, 3X4 is a project born out of sheer respect and mutual admiration. Bearing this in mind, the album's casual, relaxed-fit modus operandi is wholly appropriate. Secondly, if you're going into this one cold, you'll find this disc pleasant at the very least, but it would behoove you to have some familiarity with Paisley touchstones like the Dream Syndicate's Days of Wine and Roses, Rain Parade's Emergency Third Rail Power Trip, and the first couple of Three O' Clock records.
3X4 was issued in a brief run as a physical release for Black Friday Record Store Day last year, and has recently been made available in wider circulation both digitally and in tangible formats. Yep Rock Records can serve you straight from the tap, and Amazon and iTunes also have you covered.

Bee Gees - High Civilization (1991)

Peter Wilson - Whenever You Want Me / Like Dynamite
Buy Peter Wilson's music here (Energise)
The latest single from Peter Wilson is all sorts of cause to celebrate. Firstly, it is a double A side (Whenever You Want Me paired with Like Dynamite) in an era when double A sides are all but forgotten - thus, has me fondly remembering such great two-for-one singles like Who Do You Think You Are/Mama, Tragedy/Heartbeat and, of course, The Edge of Heaven/Where Did Your Heart Go. Secondly, it means two more scintillating grooves from his The Passion and The Flame album are getting time to shine with sparkling new remixes, making them feel just like you do when you got a new outfit and you know you look fine on a Saturday night. And finally, it is a salute to the fact that Peter has been releasing music for 25 years. This is important because we need advocates for pop music and Peter is one such performer. For him, pop knows no boundaries, isn't inhibited by musical snobbery and transcends time & genre to give you an emotional connection to the song. Whether it be there to sooth a broken heart, give you strength or just elevate your spirit, Peter's music has always been and continues to be a complex myriad of coalescing factors that come together to craft indelible music. This is brilliantly represented in these two wisely chosen tunes...
